Jul. 07, 1968 - The World's Largest Hovercraft Makes Its VIP Passenger-Carrying Debut In Two-Way Channel Crossing: The world's largest hovercraft, the Mountbatten-class SRN4 today made its VIP passenger-carrying debut in a two-way Channel crossing from Dover to to Boulogne. The British Rail and Hoverlloy SRN-4 cost £1, 500, 000, can carry 30 cars and more than 200 passengers. Today's trip was a dress rehearsal for tomorrow when Princess Margaret will inaugurate the world's first cross-Channel car and passenger hovercraft service between Dover and Boulogne. Photo Shows: The eight uniformed girls pictured here will be known as purserettes and they will be looking after the passengers on board the Mountbatten-class SRN4 hovercraft during the Channel crossing
