Aug. 19, 1974 - World Population Conference Opens in Bucharest Elects Foreign Minister of Romania as its President: The United Nations World Population Conference, bringing together delegates from more than 130 nations for the first global political meeting on population issues, opened today, 19 August, in the Palace of the Republicii, Bucharest, George Macovescu, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Romania and head of the delegation of the host country was elected by acclamation as President of the Conference. The Conference was opened by the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Kurt Waldheim, After the Secretary-General's opening statement, the President of Romania, Nicolea Ceausescu, addressed the Conference. Statements were also made by the Secretary General of the Conference, Antonio Carrillo- Flores and by the President of the Conference Mr.Macovescu. Mr. Nicolae Ceausescu, President of the Socialist Republic of Romania, greeting the Conference participants in the Plenary Hall. Standing beside him, are Mr.Waldheim and Mr. Carrillo Flores
