Sep. 09, 1984 - The United Nations General Assembly, which commenced its 39th Regular Session on the afternoon of 18 September, elected as its President Paul J.F. Lusaka, Permanent Representative of Zambia to the UN. As proclaimed by the Assembly in 1981, the International Day of Peace was observed on the opening day of the new Session. The United Nation now has 159 Member States. Six other States and thirteen organizations have observer status. Prime Minister Kare Willoch of Norway addressing the General Assembly today
