Sep. 09, 1984 - Thirty Ninth Regular Session of the General Assembly United Nations, New York, 24 September 1984 The United Nation General Assembly, which commenced its 39th Regular Session on the afternoon of 18 September, elected as its President Paul J.F. Lusaka Permanent Representative of Zambia to the UN. As proclaimed by the Assembly in 1981, the International Day of Peace was observed on the opening day of the new session. The United Nations now has 159 Member States. Six other States and thirteen organisations have Observer status. Andrei A. Gromyko.
