Dec. 13, 1956 - 13-12-56 Muriel Smith to sing the role of Carmen at the Royal Opera House New York born Muriel Smith is the first black singer to ever sing the role of Carmen at the Royal Opera House, the opening night of which is on Monday, Dec. 17. Muriel Smith created the role of Carmen Jones in the Broadway production in 1944. She is well known to London audiences for her success in South Pacific and The King and I'.
