NASA's New Horizons Spacecraft Pluto Flyby

1962 - With a speed of over two million miles a day to Mars: Part of the news awaiting the visitors of the aviation show which has been opened in Hannover, today, are propulsion engines for rockets to be held in one hand. This small electric propulsion engine which expels ionized cessium atoms will be able to push a manned aircraft to Mars at a speed of over two million miles a day. The ion engine could push manned missions to Mars and return, and exploratory trips to the farthest planet, Pluto, more than three billion five hundred million miles away, this could be the ultimate from of propulsion for deep space. A version of this engine will be tested in space later this year, and a complete ion propulsion system including a nuclear power supply may be tested as early as 1965.
