Sep. 05, 1970 - Russian Ballerina Natalia Makarova is Granted Political Asylum In Britain: Natalia Makarova, a leading Russian Ballerina who has been dancing in London with the Kirov Ballet Company defected to Britain last night. Yesterday, a few hours before she was due to dance at the Festival Hall, Miss Makarova left the Strand Palace Hotel, she told her friends in the company that she was going to make some last minute shopping before the Kirov dancers left for Holland at the weekend. Instead, she phoned Scotland Yard and said she wanted to stay in Britain. She was taken to the Home Office where she told office... Makarova, who is 29, used to partner Rudolf Nureyev in the Kirov Company in Leningrad until he defected in 1961. She is staying with friends in the country.
