Native American Indians in Western Show, London
Mar. 27 Honest Injun - They're real red Indians: The cowboy's traditional enemy was the Red Indian. Today the Native Indian of America is a protected citizen living on his own reservations, not often leaving his home State. But internationally famed cowboy Gene Autrey has persuaded some genuine Jemez Indians from the Land of Enchantment, as New Mexico is known, to join his touring Western Show, now at London's Empress Hall. Enjoying their first trip overseas, these dancers, led by their chief, White Cloud, perform their traditional own music of tom - tom and shout. Wearing colourful feathers and tribal embroideries, they bring to life something that the schoolboy up to any age has only dreamed of and read in books. When the Show is over they will all return to their native Pueblos where mostof them are farmers. They were only persuaded to go on this tour to show the world that their race is not dying out, and to spread knowledge of their colourful symbolic dances from the country of the painted desert.
