NATO maritime exercise off the east coast of Scotland
Jul. 07, 1973 - NATO Maritime Demonstration (Exercise Sally Forth). A Major demonstration of maritime power arranged by the Ministry of Defence for the Defence Ministers of the NATO countries took place today off the east coast of Scotland. The demonstration in which some 25 British ships and 60 aircraft took part, included: air operation from HMS Ark Royal, air to surface attacks by RN and RAF aircraft; anti-submarine exercises by frigates, Sea King helicopters and Nimrod aircraft; there was an amphibious warfare demonstration with Royal assault ship HMS Intrepid, including an assault launch of commando carrying helicopters and landing craft, and a take off and landing of RAF's Vstol Harrier.
