Feb. 2, 1953 - Foulness Island, Essex, U.K. - Cattle herded in the remains of an ancient farmhouse on Foulness Island, Essex, during the floods of 1953. In the early hours of the morning of February 1, 1953, strong winds and a swelling tide pushed the sea to dangerous levels. Flood defences were breached by huge waves and coastal towns in Lincolnshire, Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex and Kent were devastated as sea water rushed into the streets. The tragedy killed 1, 932 people along the English and Dutch North Sea coasts
