May 05, 1958 - Viking Ship Prepares To Sail From Norway To New York Link With The Past: An old Viking ship Ormen Lange will soon leave Berged, Norway - for a journey across the oceans to New York. The vessel will be under the command of the Norwegian engineer and ex-Army man Ronald Schonheyder. The journey is the result of a wager by American actor Kirk Douglas who said that no Norwegian nowadays dared to try the same voyage undertaken by the old Norsemen a thousand years ago. The vessel has been fitted with an engine to help the caramen in their long journey. Photo shows Ronald Schonheyder with his son Jan (9) and some of the trophies which he has won during his years as an active sportsman
