1962 - Dutch Premier Fails In Peace Bid As President Sukarno Claims West New Guinea. Mr. Jane De Quay, the Dutch Prime Minister, yesterday made an attempt to get talks with Indonesia on the future of Dutch New Guinea. But this morning President Sukarno officially proclaimed the Dutch held West New Guinea as Indonesian Province because the territory is about to become Indonesian'. An official decree said that while the province remained in Dutch hands the President would appoint a Governor and Members of the parliament and would define their powers. The new province was re-named Irian Barat (West) Irian.
