New Ark Royal, aircraft carrier, Birkenhead
1950 - QUEEN TO LAUNCH NEW ARK ROYAL: The Queen will launch the aircraft carrier Ark Royal at Birkenhead on May 3rd. She succeeds the Ark Royal which the Germans repeatedly claimed to have sunk before she was torpedoed in the MEDITERRANEAN in 1941. The new ship is believed to have a displacement of about 36, 800 tons and to carry at least 100 aircraft.
