Jul. 07, 1969 - New class of steel lifeboat shown at Southampton. Can carry 100 survivors: With the building of a lifeboat 48'6 in length with a steel hull the Royal National Lifeboat Institution has introduced a new class of lifeboat into the service - the 48 6 mark III class. A lifeboat of this type was shown to the Press at Southampton today. She was built at the yard of Messrs. Camper and Nicholson in Southampton and cost about £70, 000. After completing her acceptance trials she will be stationed in Ireland at Rosslare Harbour in County Wexford. This class of lifeboat has a seven man crew and can carry a maximum of about 100 survivors. The Rosslare Harbour coxwain, Mr. Richard Walsh, was present to see his new boat.
