New Cunard cruise liner Q4, stabilisers

Jul. 07, 1967 - Q4's latest type swing-wine stablisers. Construction of the 58, 00 ton new cunarder Q4 is on schedule for the launch on september 20 by H.M. the queen. The new ship, although only two-thirds the tonnaged of the queens. will carry as many passengers at the same speed with half the fuel consumption. In this picture, the part aft stabilsier is shown being fitted, There are four similar stablisisers, each of the latest swing-wing type, folding forwards into the hull when not in use instead of retraction as in the older type. This system keeps to the minimum the loss of space inside the ship when the stabiliser is stowed. This is the first time this modern variety of stabiliser has been fitter in atransatlanisc liner, Taking advantage of the effect of the ships high cruising speed, the stabilisers re no bigger than similar stabilizers fitted to much smaller ships. They are the most powerful stabilisers of this type so far fitted to any passenger vessel. Their operation is another technical rasper of the ship which could eventually become commute controlled
