New lightweight Pioneer Dinghy in polystyrene, River Thames

Jun. 06, 1969 - The new lightweight Pioneer Dinghy in Polystyrene is demonstrated on the River Thames: The Pioneer, a revolutionary 9ft. 6 in. dinghy, a product of the unique combination of the expertise of the famous yacht designer, Roland Prout and a team of chemists from the Polycell Laboratories, was demonstrated on the Thames today. Because it is moulded in high density Polystyrene and is made by mass production methods, it is now possible to market the boat, complete with sails, mast and all gear for only £59. The major benefits of this new material are that the boat is unsinkable, light in weight (40 lbs.) and has a high strength to weight ratio. In order to launch the Pioneer the boat is being marketed at more than 2, 000 BP petrol stations throughout the UK at a special price of £46, the offer being tied to petrol purchases. Photo shows the Pioneer dinghy in two sections as it gives a demonstration of its buoyancy, even if it is filled with water
