Mar. 03, 1980 - New radar detector aids fight against terrorists: A new weapon in the fight against terrorists, kidnappers and potential assassins is revealed today by Racal. The Radar device, a Shot Detector, gives early warning to business executives, security guards and police travelling in vehicles that a sniper has fired on them, the system detects bullets and automatically alerts escort vehicles and control centre staff with flashing lights and a loud three second repeater alarm that the particular vehicle is under attack. In an attack where no shots are fired, the alarm can be activated by the driver or passenger pressing a concealed button. Each vehicle fitted with the Shot Detector developed and manufactured by Racal - Mesl of Linlithgow - has a special identifying code to enable security forces to positively identify the car or van under attack. The system is fitted with a serial on the roof of the vehicle, and a control and indicator panel mounted on the dashboard. It is suitable for saloon cars, armoured security vans and military vehicles. The cost of the system is around £6, 000.
