New School of Navigation, Tower Hill, London

May 05, 1970 - New School of Navigation on Tower Hill: Of outstanding interest among the buildings of the new city of London Polytechnic, whose designation was formally announced today, is the new 00, 000 School of Navigation on Tower Hill. The school itself, comprising the former Department of Navigation of Sir John Case College, and senior sections of the former King Edward VII Nautical College, has courses for all grades of ship's officers for the Merchant Navy and covering the entire range of examination for Board of Trade certificates. From September 1970 it will also offer a B.Sc. degree course in maritime studies. This course, approved by the Council for National Academic Awards, will be unusual in marrying business with technical studies. The school also has an Air Section, the only one of its type in Britain which has the support of the Department of Education and Science. Thirteen hundred students pas through the School each year with an average of 290 in attendance at any one time. Photo shows the Gyro Instrument Room which is conducted by Capt.J.Pratt (in background). With the use of closed circuit TV it enables students to see in much greater detail what happens when the gyro is dismantled for repair of cleaning
