New School of Navigation, Tower Hill, London

May 05, 1970 - New school of navigation on tower hill.: Of outstanding interest among the buildings of the new City of London Polytechnic, whose designation was formally announced today, is the new 600, 000 School Navigation on Tower Hill. The school itself, comprising the former Department of Navigation of sir John Cass College, and senior sections of the former King Edward VII Nautical College, has courses for all grades of ship's offices for the Merchant navy and covering the entire range of examination for Board of Trade certificates. From September 1970 it ill also offer a B.S. degree course in maritime studies. This course, approved by the Council for National Academic Awards, will be unusual in marrying business with technical studies. the School also hs an Air Section, the only one of its type in Britain which has the support of the Department of Education and Science. Thirteen hundred students pass through the School each year with an average of 290 in attendance at any one time. Photo shows students watch Capt. W.L. Nimmo operating the Planetarium-Project ( a modified Goto Venus, which can display 2, 800 stars on the 20ft dome, and the skies of both hemispheres. Satellite projector also available
