New General Electric solid state switch (foreground under magnifier) is expected to serve as an interface between power circuits and microprocessors in such future products as major appliances, transformers. lamps and motors, as well as in electronic controls for automobiles. Since it has no moving parts, the miniature GE relay will eliminate a major problem of presently used electro mechanical switches - sticking and eroding of contact points that cause hard-to-find malfunctions. Spodnewski, a specialist in semiconductor photo-resist techniques at the GE Research and Development Center, Schenectady, N.Y. examines a king-sized overlay used in fabricating the new device
