New traffic control centre for New Scotland Yard, London

Feb. 20, 1974 - Major Boost for London traffic control. The Metropolitan Police Commissioner, Sir Robert Mark, today officially opened a highly functional new Traffic Control Centre at New Scotland Yard. Keynote of the new Control centre is speed in dealing with London's ever growing traffic congestion problems. The complex is the result of eighteen months of concentrated study and planning by police, electronics engineers, surveyors and other technicians after it became obvious early in 1972 that existing traffic control facilities would not be equal to the task of keeping London's traffic on the move. It is split into three units, each entirely self-contained and specialising in a separate aspect of traffic control - one with accidents, one with congestion, and one with all incoming non-urgent enquiries. When working at full strength, the new control centre will be manned by 17 police officers and four civilians under the control of a Superintendent.
