New US-German jointly developed battle tank, Augsburg

Oct. 10, 1967 - New US German Battle Tank; This is the new 50 ton MBT 70 battle tank, a joint United States West Germany development, seen during a demonstration in Augsburg. The giant tank has variable suspension, the chassis can be adjusted from a height of about 18 ins. from its high speed position (top picture) to its attitude in battle and over rough terrain. Each tank is estimated to cost between 198, 000 and 216, 000, if a series production of 1, 500 becomes possible, but the Bundestag has yet to decide on its introduction for the German armed forces. Defence experts say that not more than 250 MBT-70s, designed to replace the American designed M-48, may be bought
