Coney Island - Playground Of The Western World: Coney Island is the Mecca for New Yorkers who want to escape from the heat of the city to the cool breezes of the ocean. During the weekend it is estimated that one and a half million people visit the Island daily. Besides the beaches and the sea it boasts the biggest amusement park in the world with rounddabouts, roller coasters, sideshows and restaurants. In the 17th Century the island was overrun by rabbits and the Dutch who had bought the island from the Indians called it Konijn (Rabbit) Island, Coney is probably a mispronounciation of the word. Coney Island first started on its destiny as an amusement centre during the 1810's. It has been the scene of race meetings and prize fights and world famous figures such as Jimmy Durante and Eddie Cantor started their careers there as singing waiters. Coney Island is a world of sun and sand and the tang of salt water. A magic land of make-believe, the greatest show on earth without being a show at all. And playing, dozing and sitting on the beach can be found people of all creeds, colours and races, representative of descendants of the immigrants who came to the Melting Pot of America from all parts of the world.
