Newly discovered Rubens, The Judgement of Paris

Sep. 05, 1966 - A Rubens masterpiece discovered in Lot due for auction at Christie's: A Rubens masterpiece The Judgement of Paris has been discovered in a consignment of works sent to Christie's of London for auction. The painting is owned by 82 year old Mrs. Savage has had it hanging unnoticed at her home in Colwyn Road, Northampton. Thirty years ago it was worth a few shillings. A junk dealer at York had bought it to burn in the hope of recovering a few ounces of gold leaf from its frame. Mrs. Savage's husband, a picture framer, liked the look of it, and it passed to old paintings. Mr. Savage died 15 years ago and this year Mrs. Savage decided to have a clear-out so she sent 40 of the paintings to Christie's the London art auctioneers. The painting was discovered by Mr. Oliver Millar, Deputy Surveyor of the Queen's Paintings, on a routine visit to Christie's storerooms, and was later verified by Mr. Michael Jaffe, a Follow of Kings College, Cambridge, a leading authority on Rubens. Experts believe the famous painting will fetch at least ?100, 000. Photo shows the Rubens masterpieces the Judgement of Paris seen in the sale room at Christine, the London art auctioneers
