Newly discovered Rubens, Samson and Delilah

Oct. 09, 1966 - A second Rubens Discovery by Christie's in five week.: Christie's have discovered another major work by Rubens which will be sold by them on November 25th. The new discovery is a finished oil sketch or modello for one of Rubens masterpieces Samson and Delilah and was brought to them by a private collector who wanted to know if it was worth selling. The sketch, which is on panel and measures 20 ins. is in exellent condition, and shows Samson having his looks out while he sleeps at Delilah's feet with his head in her lap. The host of armed Philistines can be seen in the half-opened doorway waiting to seize Samson. Mr. David Garritt, one of Christie's Old Master painting Directors, and Mr. Brian Sewell, Another of the firm's picture experts immediately recognised the subject and Rubens characteristic style when it was brought to them. The picture is probably the final modello for the large painting of Samson and Delilah which Rubens painted after his return to Antwerp from Spain and Italy in 1608. The owner of the Rubens sketch wishes to remain anonymous, but it is understood that the picture came from Yorkshire some 30 years ago. When it is auctioned at Christie's next month it may well fetch anything from ?25, 000 to ?50, 000 Photo shows The oil sketch for one of Rubens masterpieces Samson and Delilah which was discovered by Christie's and will be auctioned by them next month
