Apr. 18 Longest Bridge in Europe Brightens Lisbon Skyline: The Tagus River Bridge, the longest in Europe and the fifth longest in the world, brightens the night skyline of Lisbon Harbour with some 555, 000 watts of Westinghouse lighting illuminating the 20.5 miles of bridge, viaduct and approaches. Opened on 6 August, the bridge provides the first permanent crossing of the Tagus at Lisbon, and connects the city with the growing industrial and tourist areas of Southern Portugal. It is designed for both rail and highway traffic
