Oct. 10, 1966 - REFEREE QUITS AFTER ARGUMENT OVER RULES IN BIG GOLF BATTLE BETWEEN JACK NICKLAUS AND GARY PLAYER: An argument over the rules of golf - and then a change of referee for the battle between JACK NICKLAUS and GARY PLAYER for Picadilly's £16, 000 World Match Play title at Wentworth today. The incident which sparked off the argument between NICKLAUS and Colonel TONY DUNCAN, the referee, came after NICKLAUS had hooked his ball into a ditch. It was told by DUNCAN that he could lift the ball and count a penalty stroke. Having done this NICKLAUS found that a signpost impeded his view, so he asked permission to drop the ball again without penalty - this was refused by referee DUNCAN. After the incident Colonel DUNCAN asked to be relieved and his place was taken by GERALD MICKLEM.
