Feb. 26 World's Largest Tanker Christened by Irish Premier's Wife in Japan.: The world's largest tanker, the 312, 000 DWT Universe Ireland, was christened today (Aug 15) by Mrs. John Lynch, wife of the Irish Premier currently visiting Japan with her husband. The christening ceremony took place at the Yokohama shipyard of Ishikawajima -Harima Heavy Industries. The big ship is the first of six super mammoth tankers for long term charter by Gulf Oil Co. The Universe Ireland will transport 2.2 million barrels of crude oil on each trip from Kuwait to a storage terminal at Bantry Bay, Ireland.Main specifications of the ship are overall length 346 meters, breadth 53.3 meters, draft 24.1 meters. Photo shows Baloons, doves, and streamers emerge from a big globe container suspended by a crane as Mrs. Lynch severs acord with a small hatchet some 200 yards distance, which dropped a banner to reveal the ship's name.
