Mar. 03, 1967 - Vast oil threat to the South Coast - Volunteers help to clean the beaches in Cornwall. The wrecked oil tanker Torrey Canyon, pounded by the heavy seas, has now broken into three parts and sinking rapidly. Half of the ship's 120, 000-ton cargo of thick black oil has poured into the sea and is being driven slowly up the English Channel - menacing the whole South Coast. Yesterday local Cornish housewives and their children, armed with buckets and watering cans were spraying the beach at Marazion, Cornwell, with detergent to was away the oil that coated their golden sands.
