Dec. 12, 1966 - World's Biggest Ship Completed. The World's largest tanker Idemitsu Maru, 210, 000 tons, built by the Ishikawajima-Harima heavy Industries Co, for the Idemitsu Oil Co. in Japan, was handed over to the owners in a special ceremony near Yokohama. The mammoth ship. 342 metres long, 49.8 metres wide and 23.2 metres deep, is due to make her maiden voyage shortly, to Kuwait. The fully automated ship has a 32-man crew. She cost 15 million dollars to build. If she carried beer instead of oil in her 244, 800 kilolitre tanks, it would be enough to fill 1, 290 million bottles of beer.
