Jul. 07, 1968 - TRIAL RUN FOR WORLD'S BIGGEST SHIP: The 312, 000-DWT tanker Universe Ireland, is shown undergoing sea trials in Sagami Bay about 60 kms south of Tokyo, before beig christened by Mrs. John H. Lynch, wife of the Prime Minister of Ireland at Yokohama on August 15th. 1968. The huge tanker which can carry 400, 000 cubic meters of oil, is 346 meters long, and was built by the Ishikawajima-Harima and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries for the National Bulk Carriers on behalf of the Gulf Oil Corp; who have ordered six tankers of the same size, and will run from Kuwait to Bantry Bay, Ireland
