Oil Tanker

Aug. 08, 1968 - World's Biggest Ship Christened. The world's largest tanker, the 312-ton DWT Universe Ireland, was christened on August 15th, by Mrs. John Lynch, wife of the Prime Minister of the Irish Republic. The christening took place at the Yokohama Shipyard of Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries. The huge ship is the first of six super mammoth tankers for long-term charter by Gulf Oil Co. The Universe Ireland will transport 2.2 million barrels of crude oil on each trip from Kuwait to a storage terminal at Bantry Bay, Ireland. Photo Shows:- Balloons, dives and streamers emerge from a big globe container suspended by crane as Mrs. Lynch severs the cord with a small hatchet some 200 yards distance, which dropped the banner to reveal the ship's name
