May 05, 1955 - THE WORLD'S BIGGEST TAnkER launched'. THE STAVROS NIAROHOS ENTERS THE WATER. The world's biggest oil tanker - the SPYROS NIARCHOS (47, 760 tons) was launched on Friday in Vickers-Armstrong yard, Barrow in-Furness by LADY WEEKS wife of General Sir Ronald Weeks. This is the Largest merchant ship built In Britain since the Queen Elizabeth and is named after the eight year old eon of Mr. Stavros Niarchos, the young Greek who control, the world's biggest independent tanker fleet.
