Dec. 12, 1955 - The World's Biggest Tanker Launched'.. The Spyros Niarchos Enters The Water. The World's biggest oil tanker - the Spyros Niarchos (47, 750 tons) was launched on Friday in Vickers-Armstrongsyard, Barrow in-Furness by Lady Weeks wife of General Sir Ronald Weeks. This is the largest merchant ship built in Britain since the Queen Elizabeth and is named after the eight year old son of Mr. Stavros Niarchos, the young Greek who controls the world's biggest independent tanker fleet.
