Jan. 01, 1954 - Gelignite Used To Destroy Ancient Steeple In Hamilton - Scotland: About 1, 000 people, including many schoolchildren watched the destruction of the Old Tollbooth Steeple, in Muir Street, Hamilton, Scotland, recently - with the aid of gelignite charges. The Steeple bell had tolled out the hours for 312 years but the steeple foundation were eaten away and it menaced a nearby housing scheme.
