Feb. 26 Preparing For The Winter Olympic Games 72. Preparations for the XIth Olympic Winter Games at Sapporo, Japan which opens on February 3, 1972 are steadily progressing as sites for the 35 events take shape in Japan's northernmost island of Hokkaido. Sapporo, the island's principal city will host the Games, which will be the first Winter Olympic Games ever held in Asia.
