Aug. 08, 1968 - Lighting the Olympic Torch at Ancient Olympia. In the traditional ceremony at Ancient Olympia, Greece, the Olympic torch which will be carried to Mexico for the Olympic Games was lit at the sacred alter by young maidens in ancient Greek tunics, and handed over to the first Greek runner who takes it out of the Ancient Olympia holy area.
