Sep. 09, 1968 - Olympic Torch Explodes During Journey Across Spain. The Olympic Torch is being carefully carried across Spain by athletes, after it had exploded three times in 48 hours. Four athletes were burned by the explosions. A number of other runners have been slightly burned by the spluttering gas flame. When the runners reach a relay point, a relief athlete is waiting with another torch. If the red hot torch touches the cold torch, it is liable to produce an explosion.
