Sep. 09, 1968 - Olympic Torch explodes during Journey across Spain.: The Olympic Torch is being carefully carried across Spain by athletes, after it had exploded three times in 48 hours. Four athletes were burned by the explosions. A number of other runners have been slightly burned by the spluttering gas flame. When the runners reach a relay point, a relief athletic is waiting with another torch. If the red hot torch touches the cold torch, is it liable to produce an explosion.
