Nov. 11, 1971 - Olympic Torch Handles Are Officially Presented: Dr. Erwin Lauerbach, Secretary of State in the Bavarian Ministry of Culture personally introduced the torch handles which will help the bearers to bring the olmpic flame from Greece to Munich. For the first time in 36 years, the torches will travel over land the whole way, and roughly 6, 500 torch handles are needed as each bearer will be allowed to keep hi own, as well as the jersey showing the emblem of the 20th olympic games, for a souvenir. The runners, riders, and bearers travelling on rowing boats will all be given manual handles, but the cyclists will have a handle that can be fixed to the bike as demonstrated on our picture by the Secretary of State. The olympic flame will be lit on Mount Olympus on 28th July 1972 and then he carried by 5300 torch bearers to Munich to kindle the fire during the opening ceremony on August 26th
