May 05, 1984 - The Meandering 82 Day Journey of the 1984 Olympic Torch Relay began today in New York City in Front of the United Nations Building. on the same day that the Soviet Union Announced that They would not send their Athletes to the Games in Los Angeles Gina Hemphill and Bill Thorpe Jr. Grand children of Olympic Greats Jesse Owens and Jim Thorpe, Lit the torch and ran the first Kilometer.
