1958 - Twelve-mile traffic Jam at Opening of Nayang University. Chairman makes his Speech. The biggest traffic hold-up in the history of Singapore was created by the thousands of people who wished to attend the opening of the New Nayang University - the highest seat of Chinese Education in South East Asia by the Governor Sir William Goode. The jam stretched for twelve miles from the University - and the time for the ceremony approached - thousands of guests decided to leave their cars and walk -this added to the confusion was caused by the narrow roads leading to the University. The University was built from public donations from millionaires to labourers.
