Oxford and Cambridge boat race lark on River Thames
Oct. 10, 1980 - The young blades are at it again: Outside the London Rowing Club, on the Thames towpath at Putney, last Friday, members of the Oxford Union Society, clad in evening dress, as they prepare to do battle with a Cambridge Union eight. They were re-enacting a famous lark carried out in the midsummer of 1950 when a black tie boat race was held on the River Cam between the debating societies. And the man standing in the middle, the former Liberal Leader, Jeremy Thorpe, rowed in the Oxford eight that year, and this year started the race, with Lord Mountbatten's old samurai sword which was won by Oxford. and Cambridge about to start off with their evening dressed crews on the Thames at Putney
