PC Norwell Lionel Gumbs at Hendon training college

Apr. 05, 1967 - London's First Black Policeman: Here is London's first black Policeman. He is Mr. Norwell Lionel Gumbs 21, from St. Kitts in the Leeward Islands. PC Gumbs is in training at the Metropolitan Police training college at Hendon. He came to England when he was nine years old, and was educated in Bromley, before going on to Haverstock Comprehensive School, Morden, Surrey. He gained two GCEs. Policemen seem to run in his family, he has three uncles who are Police Superintendents, one in St. Vincent, one in Antigua and one in St. Kitts.
