Pearly King of Hoxton, George Hitchen, East London
Sep. 09, 1963 - 15-year-old Pearly King crowned: Last night 15-year-old George Hitchen was crowned Pearly King of Hoxton, to become London's youngest Pearly King. As long as he remains a bachelor his Queen will be his married sister Mrs Carole Faulkner, 18, but if he marries she will abdicate in favour of his wife. His mother has been sewing the traditional pearl buttons onto his uniform and has not yet finished the task, when complete the uniform will have 15, 000 buttons on it. Last night's coronation was carried out by the Reverend Knight of St John's, Bethnal Green.
