People's Action Party of Singapore outside Changi Jail

Jun. 06, 1959 - People's Action Party Members Released from Jail : The eight members of the People's Action Party - which recently won the Singapore elections - and who have been held in Changi Jail since the 1956 riots - have been released. This follows an ultimatum from the leader of the Party - Mr. Lee Kuan Yew the Prime minister designate - that he would not form a Government until the men were released. Singapore has been declared an independent state within the Commonwealth. Photo shows youthful supporters with their banners outside the prison gates - prior to release of the detainees
