Jul. 07, 1973 - Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton separate: Elizabeth Taylor said in New York last night that she and her husband, Richard Burton, have separated but that she hopes it is only temporary and that they can be reconciled. In her statement, Miss Taylor said she thought it would be a good and constructive idea if Richard and I separated for while. We have been in each other's pockets constantly and I believe it has caused a temporary breakdown in communications. The couple have been married nine years. They are reported to have had a quarrel sparked off by Miss Taylor leaving New York for California while Burton stayed on to pick up their daughter, Maria, arriving from Europe.
