Three physicists working on Gunn-effect diodes
Apr. 17 High levels of continuous microwave power may be obtained from compact, solid-state microwave generators as a result of the successful demonstration of the operation of Gunn-effect diodes in direct, diode-to-diode series interconnection by three physicists at the General Electric Research and Development Center. The laboratory proof of the direct series operation of Gunn-effect diodes, an electronic feat previously believed impossible, may lead to the development of large arrays of Gunn-effect diodes, which could produce many watts of power in the 10 gigahertz microwave range with the efficiency of one diode. Such devices could be used to power phased-array radar systems, handheld radar equipment, and microwave relay communication networks.
