He was President of the liberal PVV (Partij voor Vrijheid en Vooruitgang) political party 1972-73 and 1977-82. He served as minister of Finances in 1973-77, and became Minister of state in 1985. Since 1989 he is a member of the European Parliament. In 2006 he was ennobled in the rank of viscount
