Mar. 03, 1977 - United Nations Water Conference opens in Mar del Plata: The United Nations Water Conference, the first world wide intergovernmental meeting on problem of ensuring aft water supplies for the future, opened today in Mar del Plata, Argentina. Delegates from 105 countries, as well as from dozens of intergovernmental and nongovernmental organizations, were present at the opening meeting. The Conference, scheduled to end on 25 March, is being held in the Hotel Provincial in the coastal city of mar del Plata, south of Buenos Aires. the President of Argentina, Jorge Rafael Videla, addressed the Conference after it was opened by Gabriel van Laethem, UN Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs. As President of the Conference the delegates elected by accltion Luis Urbano Jaurogui, Argentina's Secretary of Natural Resources and head of the Argentina National Commission for the Conference.
